I’ve got three little helpers in my house who love to get their hands into whatever mama is cooking in the kitchen. They have been begging me for some aprons of their own. Especially when they saw the cute apron, I made a few weeks ago from a couple tea towels. You can find that here.

So, I got to thinking… I could make some quick and simple aprons for the kids from tea towels!

I hopped onto Amazon and found a package of 4 tea towels. The best part was they all coordinated in color and were so adorable! OK the second-best part was I could make 3 aprons (for my three kids) from these 4 tea towels. Win! Win!

To Make 3 Kid Aprons You will Need:

  • 4 Tea Towels
  • 1/4-inch Elastic Band
  • White or Coordinating Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Fabric Scissors

This really is so easy! You can make these aprons as simple or custom as you would like. Three of the tea towels will be used to make the 3 aprons. The fourth tea towel will be used to make the pockets and the ties if you want.

I chose to use elastic for the necktie. The elastic makes the apron comfortable for the kids and gives them some wiggle room.

The process starts by folding the two corners on the short side of the towel down and cutting the excess. This gives the tea towel an apron shape. You can make any adjustments to the length of the apron as well.

If you have extra scraps from the tea towels, you can use those for making ties around the waist. Or you could just use elastic.

If you’re making an apron for a small child, you may need to cut some fabric off the bottom of the apron. Just sew a new seam. You could use the extra scrapes for extra creativity!

OfCourse, you don’t have to sew 3 aprons with 4 tea towels, you could sew one with 2 tea towels.

Make it Custom Aprons

The 3 aprons I made are each a little different. My daughter chose the pink tea towel (OfCourse! she LOVES pink!). She also wanted to have the bunny, which is on the polka dot towel, to adorn her cute little apron. So, we got a little creative with the pink apron. Using some extra cuts from her tea towel to make little pockets and the bunny to make one big pocket. Since she’s itty bitty still, I cut some fabric off the bottom of her apron and used the extra fabric there for the ties.

In all honesty, it was super fun to get creative, but the boy’s aprons were so much simpler.

How to Make a Simple Kids Apron:

For my boys aprons (the green and yellow gingham towels), I simply used 2 thirds of the polka dot towel to make a large deep pocket. Then I sewed a seam along the center of the pocket to divide the huge pocket into 2 large ones. You could make 3 seams for 3 large pockets.

I did not alter the length of their aprons, which made these aprons come together in a snap.

So, choose your route. Get creative! Or keep it simple! Either way they will be adorable.
